What are research peptides?
Research peptides are short chains of amino acids — typically 2 to 50 residues — synthesized under controlled laboratory conditions for use in in-vitro and preclinical studies. Because peptides are the signaling language of the body, they are widely used by laboratories to probe receptor binding, cell-signaling cascades, tissue-culture response, and analytical method development.
Peptides sold for research are supplied as lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder in sealed vials. They are Research Use Only materials: they are not drugs, not dietary supplements, and are not intended for human or veterinary use, consumption, diagnosis, or treatment.
How to read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A Certificate of Analysis is the single most important document when sourcing research peptides. It is the third-party lab record that tells you what is actually inside the vial.
- Purity by HPLC — high-performance liquid chromatography separates the target peptide from truncated sequences and process impurities. Look for a stated purity percentage and a visible chromatogram, not just a number typed on a page.
- Identity by mass spectrometry — MS confirms the molecular weight matches the intended sequence. Purity without identity is meaningless.
- Lot / batch number — the COA must reference the exact lot printed on the vial you received.
- Test date and testing lab — a COA with no date or no named laboratory is not verifiable.
- Appearance and net peptide content — describes the physical form and how much of the vial mass is peptide versus counterion and residual salts.
Handling and storage of lyophilized peptides
Peptide stability is driven by temperature, moisture, and light. Lyophilized powder is far more stable than peptide in solution, which is why material ships and stores in dry form.
- Store sealed lyophilized vials at -20°C in a frost-free freezer, protected from light. Short transit at ambient temperature is normal and does not compromise lyophilized material.
- Allow a cold vial to equilibrate to room temperature before opening. Opening a cold vial pulls in humid air and condenses moisture onto the powder.
- Handle in a clean, low-humidity workspace. Moisture is the primary driver of hydrolysis and aggregation.
- Once in solution, peptides are far less stable. Refrigerate, minimize freeze–thaw cycles, and aliquot rather than repeatedly reopening a single vial.
- Cysteine-, methionine-, and tryptophan-containing sequences are oxidation-sensitive; protect them from air and light with extra care.
Solvent handling basics for laboratory work
Dissolving lyophilized powder into a known volume of solvent is a laboratory step used so a defined concentration can be prepared for experimental work.
BAC — water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol — is commonly used in laboratory settings because the preservative limits microbial growth in multi-draw vials. Purified water and acetic acid solutions are also used depending on the sequence's solubility profile.
- Calculate concentration before you begin: peptide mass in the vial divided by the solvent volume added. 10 mg of peptide in 2 mL of solvent gives 5 mg/mL.
- Add solvent slowly down the inside wall of the vial. Do not spray solvent directly onto the powder cake and do not shake — both cause foaming and can denature the peptide.
- Swirl gently, or let the vial rest, until the solution is clear. Cloudiness or visible particulate can indicate incomplete solubility for that sequence.
- Label every vial in solution with the peptide, the concentration, and the date prepared.
